Pennhurst Asylum
The history of Pennhurst is a sad one. Originally known as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic, Pennhurst was an establishment for mentally and physically disabled individuals around Spring City, Pennsylvania. Opened in 1903, horrible conditions were later exposed in a documentary, pushing the court to rule conditions there violated patients constitutional rights. In 1987 the institution was closed for good.
In the past decade Pennhurst as been used as a haunted attraction. With permission from the owners I had a private tour of the grounds and administration building. |
